Yemen conflict intensifies as tribal leaders launch civilian protection code
Renewed fighting between Houthi rebels and Yemen's internationally recognized government has resulted in the deaths of nearly 100 combatants. Military sources report that 63 Houthi fighters and 34 pro-government combatants were killed, primarily near the strategic Bab al-Mandab strait in southwestern Yemen. The clashes followed airstrikes and represent some of the most intense combat since a recent Houthi offensive.
Amidst the escalating violence, approximately 100 Yemeni tribal leaders launched a ‘code of honour’ at the United Nations in Geneva. This initiative, developed through two years of consultation and organized by the Centre for Security Sector Governance (DCAF), aims to protect civilian populations and ensure humanitarian aid access during conflict. The code is based on traditional Yemeni values and has already received pledges of support from nearly five thousand dignitaries. Switzerland has expressed support for the initiative as part of its peace promotion and humanitarian law policies.
