Yemen conflict escalates as UN warns of broader war

The United Nations has issued warnings regarding a significant escalation in the Yemeni conflict as fighting intensifies across multiple fronts, including Taiz, Al-Jawf, and Al-Bayda. UN Special Envoy Hans Grundberg described recent Houthi attacks as an ‘extremely alarming development’ that threatens to expand the scope of the war and complicates the path toward a political settlement.

In Al-Jawf province, Yemeni government forces launched a major offensive targeting the Houthi-held Al-Labanat military base. The operation included airstrikes that reportedly destroyed command centers and arms caches. Simultaneously, Houthi forces have attempted to disrupt key supply routes linking Taiz to the strategic port of Mocha and the Bab al-Mandab Strait.

The humanitarian impact is mounting, with reports indicating that recent clashes in Taiz and Hodeidah resulted in over 200 casualties within a 72-hour window and displaced more than 1,500 families. UN Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric warned that continued military escalation could lead to ‘devastating’ political, economic, and security consequences for the region.
