Yemen displacement exceeds 200,000 amid military escalation

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reports that over 201,217 people have been displaced in Yemen due to recent military escalations. Displacement figures have surged from approximately 76,000 in mid-September to current levels, with Taiz province being the hardest hit, accounting for 114,708 displaced persons.

Between September 27 and October 3, the IOM recorded 21,798 new displacements, a 26 percent increase from the previous week. The conflict involves fighting between Iran-backed Houthi forces and the Saudi-backed internationally recognized government. The government has launched the ‘Dawn of Yemen’ operation to retake territory, including the capital, Sanaa.

Beyond internal movement, more than 3,700 people have fled by sea to Djibouti. The humanitarian situation is critical, with the IOM noting that the humanitarian aid plan for Yemen is currently only 20 percent funded. Additionally, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) warns of a crisis for pregnant women, estimating that 3,200 newly displaced women require urgent obstetric care.
