Yemen displacement exceeds 233,000 amid renewed conflict
The number of internally displaced persons in Yemen has risen to over 233,000 following the resumption of large-scale conflict between Houthi rebels and internationally recognized government forces in June. A significant portion of this displacement, approximately 121,530 people, is concentrated in the Taiz governorate.
In Taiz, the situation has reached a critical point as Houthi rebels have surrounded the city, severing major communication routes to other provinces like Aden. This siege has restricted the movement of humanitarian personnel and supplies. The World Health Organization has warned that 12 hospitals in the city have only enough fuel for four days of operation, and surgical supplies have been completely exhausted. There is an urgent need for oxygen, medicine, and fuel to support intensive care and dialysis patients.
Humanitarian agencies are also reporting severe protection concerns for vulnerable groups, including women and children. UNICEF estimates that at least 110,000 of the displaced are children, noting that the recent violence undermines any remaining stability for youth who have already faced years of hunger and interrupted education. Additionally, the UNHCR has confirmed a cholera outbreak in the Marzaki camp, highlighting the health risks posed by overcrowding in refugee settlements.
