Yemen displacement surges as military escalation drives 276,000 people from homes
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reports that over 276,000 people have been internally displaced in Yemen since June due to escalating military operations across several provinces. The displacement has been particularly severe in Taiz, which hosts approximately 126,000 displaced individuals, followed by Lahj and Aden.
In addition to internal movement, thousands of Yemenis have fled across maritime borders to Djibouti, with 3,836 arrivals recorded, half of whom are children. Human rights groups have documented significant violence in Taiz, including the firing of 369 projectiles into residential areas within a 48-hour period, resulting in civilian casualties.
Aid agencies are warning of a widening humanitarian gap, noting that needs are outstripping the capacity to provide shelter, clean water, and healthcare. There is an urgent call for an additional $30 million to address the funding shortfall required to support affected families.
