Yemen Faces Growing Humanitarian Strain from Climate Migration and Floods

Yemen is confronting a dual humanitarian pressure. Climate‑induced migration from the Horn of Africa brings an estimated one‑to‑two hundred thousand newcomers each year, many of whom aim for Gulf states but instead enter a resource‑scarce environment already plagued by civil war, extremist groups and militia activity. Analysts warn that some migrants may be recruited into violent factions, amplifying insecurity in Yemen and potentially across the wider Middle East.

In the first half of 2026, severe floods damaged shelters for more than 39,000 displaced families, affecting roughly 210,000 people. Humanitarian partners provided emergency shelter, non‑food items and solar kits, yet the response faces chronic challenges such as limited funding, depleted stocks, overcrowded sites and uncertain land tenure. Plans call for replenishing supplies, boosting local partner capacity and improving flood preparedness.
