Yemen humanitarian crisis and famine
Entities: extremist groups · Horn of Africa · Yemen
Overview
Since late May 2026 the United Nations warned that famine pockets are emerging in Houthi‑controlled northern Yemen, with half the population projected to face crisis‑level food insecurity and humanitarian funding far below needs. By mid‑June the UN highlighted that 22 million Yemenis – especially women and girls – required aid, and maternal mortality rose to the highest level in the Arab region. Over 3 million internally displaced people were recorded in government‑held areas such as Marib, Taiz and Aden, two‑thirds of them experiencing severe hunger.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reported that more than 7.3 million Yemenis received life‑saving assistance between January and May 2026, while funding gaps left only 12.8 % of the $2.16 billion required for the 2026 Humanitarian Response Plan secured. The World Health Organization’s 2026‑2035 global WASH strategy, launched on 20 July 2026, expanded emergency health services in four hard‑to‑reach districts, delivering surgery, maternal‑child care and outbreak response to over 42 000 people. No maternal deaths were recorded among roughly 2 700 deliveries, and chronic‑care patients numbered more than 5 200.
On 29 July 2026 new pressures were documented. Climate‑induced migration from the Horn of Africa is bringing an estimated 100‑200 000 newcomers each year, many of whom risk recruitment by armed groups, adding to insecurity. Severe floods in the first half of 2026 damaged shelters for over 39 000 displaced families—about 210 000 people—prompting emergency provision of shelter, non‑food items and solar kits. Humanitarian partners continue to struggle with chronic funding shortfalls, depleted stockpiles, overcrowded sites and uncertain land tenure, while plans are underway to replenish supplies, strengthen local partner capacity and improve flood preparedness.
