Yemen government launches 'Dawn of Yemen' military offensive

Yemen’s internationally recognized government has launched a major military offensive, dubbed 'Dawn of Yemen,' aimed at reclaiming territory from Houthi rebels and restoring state authority. Rashad al-Alimi, chairman of the Presidential Leadership Council, announced the campaign following a period of intensified fighting.

Government forces claim significant tactical gains on the country’s west coast, including the seizure of the Dhubab district and the Dhubab airport. These areas are strategically vital due to their proximity to the Bab al-Mandab strait, a critical maritime chokepoint for international shipping. Military spokespersons reported that the offensive has involved over 1,100 strikes using aircraft, artillery, rockets, and drones.

However, the Houthi-aligned Saba news agency has denied these claims, describing reports of government advances as attempts to mask Houthi military setbacks. The conflict has seen a marked escalation since the collapse of a 2022 truce, with recent fighting causing significant displacement and threatening regional maritime security.
