Yemen healthcare system faces collapse amid military escalation
Yemen’s healthcare system is facing severe strain due to renewed military escalation and mass displacement. According to United Nations data, only about 59.3% of health facilities are operating at full capacity, leaving many regions with inadequate access to essential care.
Between August 6 and September 18, the Ministry of Health and Population reported 3,672 casualties, consisting of 674 deaths and 2,998 injuries. The conflict has also triggered a massive displacement crisis, with reports indicating over 122,000 people have been internally displaced across eight governorates.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has escalated its emergency response, implementing an advanced plan to support 11 governorates. This includes expanding surgical capacity, supporting ambulance services, and securing medical supplies. However, aid efforts face significant obstacles due to movement restrictions and the direct targeting of nine medical facilities and ambulances.
In addition to physical trauma from the conflict, the population faces rising risks from malnutrition and infectious diseases, including cholera, dengue fever, and measles. Hospitals in cities like Aden are struggling to manage the influx of wounded patients while simultaneously dealing with shortages of beds, blood, and medical staff.
