Taiz, Yemen faces humanitarian catastrophe amid Houthi siege

The city of Taiz in southwestern Yemen is facing a severe humanitarian crisis as Houthi fighters have encircled the area and blocked the primary supply route linking the city to Aden. This blockade has cut off essential access to food, fuel, and medical supplies, leaving hundreds of thousands of civilians in a precarious position.

According to the United Nations, more than 250,000 people have been internally displaced in Yemen since fighting escalated in July, with Taiz accounting for 76 percent of departures and hosting 52 percent of those newly displaced. The shortage of diesel fuel has paralyzed water pumping stations, causing water production to fall by approximately 50 percent and tripling the cost of trucked water. UNICEF warns that this water crisis threatens the lives of 1.6 million children.

The healthcare system is also under extreme pressure. Local health officials report that Houthi forces have targeted medical facilities and ambulances, with 15 ambulances reportedly looted. Five major hospitals and health centers have sustained damage from shelling. Additionally, the UN World Food Programme warns that wheat flour stocks in affected areas of Taiz are nearly exhausted, as 10 out of 16 districts in the governorate are classified at emergency levels of food insecurity.
