Yemen humanitarian crisis: Millions of children face acute malnutrition
UNICEF has warned of a deepening humanitarian catastrophe in Yemen as escalating conflicts between government forces, supported by Saudi Arabia, and Houthi rebels, supported by Iran, trigger widespread malnutrition and displacement.
Akhil Iyer, UNICEF's representative in Yemen, reported that more than one-quarter of nearly 2,900 children screened by mobile nutrition teams in accessible areas were acutely malnourished, with 200 in critical condition. It is estimated that 2.2 million children under the age of five will face acute malnutrition this year, and over 500,000 are expected to suffer from severe acute malnutrition.
The resurgence of violence, particularly around Taiz and along the Red Sea coast, has displaced more than 133,000 people. In the last three weeks alone, approximately 71,000 children were forced to flee their homes. Additionally, the conflict has severely impacted education, with 243 schools closing or suspending operations, affecting roughly 140,000 students.
