Yemen humanitarian crisis worsens for 65,000 displaced women and girls

Escalating conflict involving Houthi forces in Yemen's West Coast has triggered a severe humanitarian crisis, particularly impacting women and girls. According to UN Women, an analysis conducted with the Yemen Women's Union and Oxfam highlights that thousands of displaced families are struggling to access healthcare, humanitarian aid, and income sources.

Data from the International Organization for Migration indicates that 132,330 people, representing 22,055 families, were displaced between June 7 and September 21, 2026, with major concentrations in Taiz and Lahj. UN Women estimates that approximately 65,000 of these displaced persons are women and girls, including 5,500 female-headed households.

UNICEF reports further exacerbate the situation, noting that over 120,000 people have been displaced, including 30,000 women of reproductive age and 2,700 pregnant women. The displacement has led to the closure or limited operation of reproductive health facilities in districts such as Maqbanah and Jabal Habashi in Taiz, complicating essential care for mothers and newborns.
