Yemen hunger crisis threatens to become ‘absolutely devastating’
The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has warned that the hunger crisis in Yemen is on the verge of becoming ‘absolutely devastating’ due to renewed conflict. Matthew Hollingworth, WFP Assistant Executive Director for Program Operations, stated that hunger is accelerating rapidly as a result of a renewed Houthi land offensive against government forces, which has already claimed hundreds of lives.
The escalation has severely impacted food security in the nation of 35 million people. Currently, nearly three out of four households are unable to meet their basic nutritional needs. The crisis is exacerbated by the fact that Yemen imports approximately 90 percent of its food, making the country highly vulnerable to rising food prices and supply disruptions.
While the WFP previously assisted over 1.5 million people in government-controlled areas, the intensifying conflict has hindered access to frontline regions. The agency reported it has been unable to reach approximately 350,000 people who were previously receiving aid. WFP officials have called for increased international support to prevent the crisis from spreading beyond Yemen's borders.
