Yemen launches workshop for Fourth State of the Environment Report

In Aden, Yemen, a consultative workshop has commenced to discuss the final draft of the Fourth State of the Environment Report for the Republic of Yemen 2026. The initiative is led by the Minister of Water and Environment, Eng. Tawfiq Abdulwahid Al-Sharjabi, in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

Minister Al-Sharjabi described the report as a strategic national document and a scientific reference intended to assess Yemen’s ecosystem, diagnose environmental trends, and identify priorities for protecting natural resources. The report aims to support decision-making and promote sustainable development paths.

The workshop highlights escalating environmental challenges in the country, including water resource degradation, soil erosion, desertification, loss of biodiversity, and increasing pressure on marine and coastal environments. It also addresses waste management, chemical hazards, air quality, and the impacts of climate change, such as droughts and extreme weather events.

Al-Sharjabi noted that the ongoing conflict has exacerbated these issues by causing institutional, economic, and security deterioration, which has placed additional strain on natural systems and environmental monitoring infrastructure. The report will cover various sectors, including water resources, sanitation, soil, air quality, and climate change.
