Yemen environmental policy and regional coordination
Overview
Yemen has engaged in high-level environmental planning and regional diplomacy to address escalating ecological challenges. In early September, the Yemeni Minister of Water and Environment, Eng. Tawfiq Abdulwahid Al-Sharjabi, led a consultative workshop in Aden to discuss the final draft of the Fourth State of the Environment Report for 2026. This report, developed with the UNEP and UNDP, serves as a scientific reference to diagnose trends such as water resource degradation, desertification, and biodiversity loss, noting that ongoing conflict has worsened these issues by straining monitoring infrastructure.
By late September, Yemen’s environmental leadership expanded to a regional level, presiding over the 37th session of the Council of Arab Ministers Responsible for Environmental Affairs in Cairo. During this meeting, Minister Al-Sharjabi advocated for a transition from consensus to “actionable implementation” and called for unified Arab positions in international forums. Discussions at the regional level focused on climate change impacts on food and water security, the blue economy, and preparations for the COP31 conference.
