Yemen military escalation threatens truce amid recruitment allegations

Military tensions in Yemen have escalated, threatening the 2022 truce as clashes between Houthi militants and government-aligned forces result in casualties on both sides and among civilians. In Al-Hudaydah, Houthi ballistic missile strikes on the Al-Khokha district reportedly killed three civilians, including a child, while another strike in Hays injured two young sisters. In Taiz, the Yemeni army conducted drone strikes against Houthi command centers in the Al-Salw front, and government-aligned Shabwa Defense forces launched retaliatory operations in several fronts following a drone attack.

Adding to the humanitarian concerns, Yemeni content creator Ahmed al-Jaishi has accused the Houthi group of using prisoner releases as a recruitment tactic. Al-Jaishi claims that instead of humanitarian mercy, the group is using the release of detainees as a “trap” to force them into frontline combat roles to compensate for manpower shortages. He noted a disparity in treatment, highlighting that while some are released to fight, political activists and peaceful dissenters, such as Sahar al-Khawlani and Fares Abu Bara'a, remain imprisoned.

Furthermore, technical examinations of missile debris targeting the Mocha port and the West Coast identified the weapons as Iranian-made Fateh-110 ballistic missiles. Spokesperson Sadiq Duwaid accused Tehran of violating international resolutions by supplying these munitions to the region.
