Yemen Ministry of Agriculture and UNDP discuss water management project

The Yemeni Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation, and Fisheries held a coordination meeting with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to discuss a project aimed at improving water management and irrigation for sustainability and efficiency.

Implemented by the UNDP in cooperation with the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) and funded by the World Bank Group, the project’s first phase focuses on the Tuban basin in Lahj Governorate and the Wadi Hajr basin in Hadramaut Governorate. Key objectives include enhancing water resource management, increasing water use efficiency, and supporting climate change adaptation efforts.

The project includes the reactivation and modernization of the Climate and Water Information Management System (CWIMS) to integrate meteorological, hydrological, and groundwater data. Additionally, interventions will focus on water harvesting, flood protection, rehabilitating irrigation networks, and utilizing solar energy systems. The initiative also aims to build institutional capacity for water user associations and local committees to ensure long-term resource management.
