Yemen agricultural and water management initiatives

Overview

Agricultural and water management initiatives in Yemen, supported by international organizations and the World Bank Group, are focusing on enhancing food security and climate resilience.

In late September 2026, the Yemen Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation, and Fisheries and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) inspected greenhouse installations in the Lahj Governorate. This part of the ‘Response to Enhance Food Security and Resilience’ project aims to improve production efficiency and farmer livelihoods through modern techniques in Lahj, Abyan, Taiz, and Al Dhale'e.

By early October 2026, discussions between the Ministry and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) shifted focus toward water management and irrigation sustainability. This project, implemented by the UNDP and UNOPS, targets the Tuban basin in Lahj and the Wadi Hajr basin in Hadramaut. Planned interventions include modernizing the Climate and Water Information Management System (CWIMS), rehabilitating irrigation networks, and utilizing solar energy to support long-term resource management and climate change adaptation.
