Yemen moves to unify maritime import and permit procedures

The internationally recognized Yemeni government is working to unify import procedures and maritime permits for ships and shipping companies. This initiative aims to facilitate the flow of goods through ports following increased shipping and insurance costs, as well as heightened security tensions in the Bab al-Mandab strait, the West Coast, and Taiz governorate.

During a meeting in Aden, the Ministry of Transport, the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Aden Gulf Ports Corporation, and the Aden Chamber of Commerce and Industry agreed to establish a unified mechanism for procedures and permits in the coming days. Officials noted that strict port measures were implemented due to the emergency situation caused by Houthi control over key areas, including Mocha and the West Coast.

Salim Salman Al-Wali, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade, emphasized that the private sector is a key partner in ensuring market stability and the continuous flow of essential goods. Efforts will include accelerating customs clearance, addressing illegal fees and levies, and diversifying import sources. Meanwhile, maritime experts have noted that rising costs and reduced shipping routes to Aden have made securing maritime transport services increasingly difficult for Yemeni traders.
