Yemen seeks US military aid amid escalating Houthi clashes

The Yemeni government is seeking increased military assistance from the United States to combat Houthi militia advances. Vice President Abdullah Al-Alimi Bawazir stated that while Yemen is not requesting direct American combat involvement, it seeks enhanced intelligence, security coordination, and support to bolster its own military capacity. This request follows reports that President Donald Trump has not yet committed to direct military action.

On the ground, fighting has intensified in the southwestern governorates of Taiz and Lahj. Government-aligned forces reported repelling Houthi attacks on key roads and claimed control of Mount Qarfan. However, recent clashes have resulted in significant casualties, with reports indicating ninety-eight government soldiers and fifty-two Houthi fighters were killed in a 24-hour period.

The Houthi militia has reportedly deployed reinforcements to active combat zones, with concerns raised regarding the recruitment and deployment of minors. The conflict remains critical due to the Houthi expansion along the Red Sea coast, which threatens vital global shipping routes and energy supplies.
