Yemen: UN envoy moves in Oman as Aden faces displacement surge
Diplomatic efforts are intensifying in response to escalating military conflict and humanitarian crises in Yemen. In Aden, Governor Abdulrahman Sheikh met with the European Union Ambassador, Patrick Simon, and the Dutch Ambassador, Jeannette Seppen, to address the surge of displaced families fleeing Houthi military escalations in Taiz and Al Hudaydah. The Governor highlighted the immense pressure on Aden’s essential services, including water, electricity, and healthcare, noting that local authorities have established a shelter camp in the Al-Fardous area to accommodate those arriving in search of safety.
Simultaneously, UN Special Envoy Hans Grundberg arrived in Muscat, Oman, for discussions with Omani officials and Houthi representatives. This diplomatic movement follows increased military operations by Houthi forces targeting the western coast and the Bab al-Mandab strait. The United Nations has expressed concern over the widening scale of hostilities in Taiz, Lahj, and Marib, while reiterating condemnation of Houthi attacks against Saudi Arabian territory and energy infrastructure. The UN continues to call for restraint and adherence to international humanitarian law to prevent further civilian casualties.
