Yemen health services face collapse in Taiz amid escalating attacks

The Yemen Ministry of Public Health and Population has warned of a severe collapse in medical services in the Taiz governorate following an escalation of Houthi attacks. The ministry reports that military strikes, including ballistic missiles and mortar fire, have targeted residential areas and health facilities, leading to the closure or partial operation of numerous clinics.

In the five coastal districts of Taiz, only approximately 20 percent of health facilities remain operational. Many sites have been closed due to damage, looting, or critical shortages of medicine, vaccines, and personnel. In the districts of Shamayatayn and Jabal Habashi, 11 previously functioning facilities have ceased operations entirely.

The United Nations has expressed deep concern regarding the intensifying combat in the Taiz region, noting the grave risks to civilians and regional stability. Humanitarian efforts have provided aid to over 125,000 displaced persons, but the situation remains critical as more than 148,000 people have been displaced by fighting.

Health risks are mounting as the country faces outbreaks of disease. Since the start of the year, Yemen has recorded approximately 7,800 suspected cholera cases and 22 deaths, alongside over 22,000 measles cases and 37 deaths linked to dengue. Additionally, emergency obstetric and neonatal care has been suspended in hospitals in Marib and Ras Al-Arah due to the reallocation of staff to treat combat casualties.
