Yemen warns of Houthi plans to seize Bab al-Mandab Strait
The Yemeni government has warned that Houthi rebels are planning to seize land along the Bab al-Mandab Strait to expand their control over the vital Red Sea shipping artery. Information Minister Moammar Al-Eryani stated that the militia is attempting to control strategic Yemeni islands and expand its presence along the western coast, a move that could allow the group to further disrupt global maritime traffic.
In response to regional maritime instability, Egypt is pursuing diplomatic de-escalation efforts. Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty announced that Cairo is coordinating with Iran and Oman to lower tensions and reinforce the freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. Abdelatty warned that continued escalation threatens global energy markets, supply chains, and food costs.
Egypt is also evaluating participation in a proposed multinational maritime coalition designed to protect shipping in the Red Sea and around the Bab al-Mandab Strait from Houthi attacks.
