Yemeni NGOs urge UN to increase civilian protection and accountability

A coalition of 266 Yemeni civil society organizations has issued an urgent appeal to the United Nations and the international community to strengthen civilian protection and establish accountability for human rights violations. The groups warned that systemic impunity is exacerbating the suffering of the Yemeni population.

The coalition documented various abuses, including extrajudicial killings, arbitrary detentions, forced displacement, and the targeting of residential areas, healthcare facilities, and schools. They specifically highlighted the impact on children, noting instances of minor recruitment for combat. Recent documented incidents include a ballistic missile strike in Marib province on September 7 that killed two children and wounded 15 civilians, as well as the shelling of villages in Taiz and the targeting of the 2 December Hospital in Mocha.

According to data from the Executive Unit for IDP Camp Management, nearly 2,183 families were displaced from the Taiz and Hodeidah governorates as of September 5. The organizations are calling on the UN Security Council to prioritize the protection of civilians, migrants, and children, and to demand transparency regarding the fate of those forcibly disappeared.
