Yemen Defence Minister Condemns Houthi Attacks on Red Sea Shipping
Yemen’s defence minister, Lieutenant General Taher al‑Aqili, said the Iran‑backed Houthi militia has for over a decade relied on violence, terrorism, piracy and chaos, exploiting Yemen’s strategic location to threaten international navigation and regional security. He warned that the group’s attacks on Red Sea shipping raise shipping costs, insurance premiums and harm the Yemeni economy, and called for the full neutralisation of the threat.
Prime Minister Shaya Zindani also condemned the attacks, describing them as part of an Iranian agenda and urging the international community to adopt a firmer stance to protect maritime corridors. Saudi Arabia’s air defences intercepted two ballistic missiles launched from Yemen, preventing casualties and damage.
The coalition supporting Yemen’s legitimate government, led by Saudi Arabia, continues to target Houthi positions in response to the militia’s declared maritime blockade against Saudi‑linked vessels.
The escalation underscores the broader risk to global trade, as the Red Sea is a vital artery for international commerce.
