Houthi Red Sea attacks prompt Yemen and German condemnations
Yemen’s defence minister, Lt. Gen. Dr. Taher al‑Aqili, warned that Houthi militias have pursued a decade‑long campaign of violence, piracy and terror in the Red Sea, exploiting Yemen’s strategic location to threaten international navigation and further Iran’s agenda. He said the Yemeni armed forces, together with the Saudi‑led coalition and international partners, will work to neutralise the threat.
Interior Minister Ibrahim Haidan echoed the defence minister, stating that Houthi attacks on commercial vessels, particularly Saudi ships, raise shipping and insurance costs, damage the Yemeni economy and endanger regional security.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz condemned the attacks as a breach of international law and an unacceptable disruption of one of the world’s key maritime trade routes. He pledged “full German solidarity with Saudi Arabia and our partners” and called for an immediate cessation of the Houthi assaults.
