Yemen's humanitarian crisis deepens as women suffer, IOM records 83,835 African migrant arrivals

The United Nations warned that Yemen's humanitarian situation is deteriorating, with 22 million people needing aid—half of them women and girls. Women of reproductive age account for nearly two‑thirds of those in need, and Yemen records the highest maternal mortality rate in the Arab region, seeing three women die daily from pregnancy‑related complications that could largely be prevented with better medical access. Food insecurity and limited health services, especially in rural areas, exacerbate the plight of pregnant women and children.

The International Organization for Migration reported that 83,835 African migrants arrived in Yemen during 2026, the majority (96 %) being Ethiopian. May saw a decline to 11,587 arrivals, with Djibouti and Somalia remaining the primary departure points. Men comprised 66 % of arrivals, while women and children each made up 17 %. Some migrants also departed Yemen, including 1,213 Ethiopians returning to Djibouti.
