Yeni Parti and Yenilik Partisi face legal dispute over name similarity
A legal dispute has emerged in Turkey regarding the similarity between the names of two political entities: Yeni Parti and Yenilik Partisi. The Court of Cassation (Yargıtay) initiated an ex officio investigation into the matter, issuing a warning to Yeni Parti due to the potential for public confusion.
Öztürk Yılmaz, leader of Yenilik Partisi, stated that the investigation was launched automatically by the Court of Cassation to ensure corporate identity protection. He noted that while the court performs its duty to prevent confusion, the similarity in names could prevent Yeni Parti from operating under its current title. Yılmaz also mentioned discussions regarding the potential unification of opposition parties.
In response, Yeni Parti spokesperson Zeynel Emre addressed concerns regarding the party's legal status and ability to participate in elections. He asserted that all legal procedures during the party's formation were completed correctly. Emre noted that Constitutional Court precedents have historically interpreted name and logo similarities narrowly, suggesting that such issues should not prevent a party's right to organize or participate in elections.
