Mersin Mayor Vahap Seçer detained in corruption probe amid fund scandal

Turkey is facing significant political and legal turmoil following a major corruption investigation in Mersin and a massive fund scandal. In Mersin, authorities have detained 59 suspects, including Mersin Metropolitan Mayor Vahap Seçer, Abdullah Özyiğit, and Ahmet Serkan Tuncer, as part of a corruption probe. An audit by the General Directorate of Public Accounts identified 13 irregular tender and direct procurement transactions totaling 41,419,000 TL involving Seçer's signature, with an estimated total public loss of 330,945,000 TL.

The investigation has sparked intense controversy regarding privacy rights. During a police raid in Mersin, private footage of a woman in nightwear was leaked to the press. While the Ministry of Interior claimed the leak was not their responsibility, Yeni Parti leader Özgür Özel alleged that individuals within the Ministry of Justice are unofficially leaking private information and footage to media outlets to manipulate public perception.

Simultaneously, a large-scale fund scandal has emerged. Yeni Parti spokesperson Zeynel Emre estimated the total economic damage, including stock market losses, at approximately 90 billion dollars. Former AKP MP Şamil Tayyar commented on the scandal, stating that those involved were ‘our children’ and ‘local and national’ figures. Özgür Özel has called for President Erdoğan to either resign or call for early elections, citing the scale of the alleged fraud.
