Yeni Parti established as second-largest Turkish parliamentary group

The Yeni Parti has been officially established in Ankara following a major leadership crisis within the Republican People's Party (CHP). The new party was formed by 91 deputies who resigned from the CHP on July 24, 2026, after the Ankara Regional Court of Justice annulled the CHP's 38th Ordinary Convention, reinstating Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu as leader and ending Özgür Özel's chairmanship.

Led by Özgür Özel, the Yeni Parti has become the second-largest group in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, holding 91 seats. This shift has relegated the CHP to the fifth-largest group with approximately 44-45 deputies, effectively moving the role of main opposition to the Yeni Parti without an election.

The party's platform focuses on a return to the parliamentary system, ending the practice of appointing trustees (kayyum), and implementing the European Charter of Local Self-Government. While the party aims for a high voter threshold based on previous local election results, analysts suggest that translating local election dynamics to central government elections remains a significant challenge due to voter stability and strategic voting patterns.
