Özgür Özel criticizes İBB trial defense rights in Silivri

The second hearing of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) corruption trial, involving 414 defendants including 53 detainees, took place at the Silivri Marmara Closed Prison. The case includes Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu.

Özgür Özel, leader of the Yeni Parti, criticized the judicial process, stating that the right to defense is being restricted. He noted that while the court acknowledged the right to defense, the judge maintained authority to determine the specific date, time, and duration of the defense, which Özel described as a “symbolic trial” rather than a fair proceeding.

Special concerns were raised regarding the courtroom's physical conditions, with reports of significant distances between defendants, lawyers, and spectators hindering effective communication. Additionally, Özel addressed the political implications of the trial, arguing that the judicial constraints placed on İmamoğlu are an attempt to suppress political opposition.
