Yeonggwang experiences heavy flooding after intense rainfall

Heavy rainfall has caused significant damage in the Jeonnam and Gwangju regions of South Korea, with the most severe impact concentrated in Yeonggwang. Nakwoldo recorded over 345mm of rain overnight, including an intense burst of 103.5mm per hour.

As of the morning of August 31, 29 damage reports had been filed with fire authorities, 26 of which originated in Yeonggwang. Reported damages include flooded homes and yards, fallen trees, collapsed walls, and landslides covering roads. While several residents in areas like Suncheon and Hwasun were forced to evacuate due to landslide risks and flooding, no casualties have been reported.

Cumulative rainfall in Nakwoldo has reached 579mm over the past five days. While heavy rain warnings were issued for Yeonggwang and Sinan, many weather alerts have since been lifted. Forecasters expect additional rain of up to 60mm throughout the day, with showers predicted for the following days.
