Ukraine's parliament approves Yevhen Chmara as Minister of Defense

The Ukrainian parliament, the Verkhovna Rada, has approved the appointment of Yevhen Chmara as the new Minister of Defense. The decision followed a proposal by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and received 312 votes out of 450 deputies. Chmara succeeds Mykhailo Fedorov in the role.

Chmara, a career special operations officer and Major General of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), outlined his primary objectives during his parliamentary address. He emphasized three key pillars for his tenure: strengthening the armed forces on the front lines, prioritizing the well-being and training of personnel, and developing the domestic defense industry.

Specifically, Chmara aims to secure strategic initiative across land, sea, air, and information domains. He also pledged to improve the speed of communication between the front and the ministry, ensure timely weapon deliveries, and implement transparent public procurement procedures to support continuous military operations.
