Yoane Wissa scores World Cup equaliser after surviving acid attack
Congolese forward Yoane Wissa headed a late equaliser for DR Congo to draw 1‑1 with Portugal in the opening match of the World Cup at Houston’s NRG Stadium. The goal marked his first appearance at a World Cup, the country’s return after 52 years.
In July 2021, Wissa was the victim of a deliberate acid attack at his home in Vannes, France. The assault left his eyes badly injured and threatened both his vision and his football career. He underwent emergency surgery, recovered fully, and later signed for Brentford after the tournament. Police arrested the attacker, a French woman who had attempted to abduct a baby, and the victim’s son was returned unharmed.
Wissa’s personal ordeal and his match‑day performance have drawn international attention, highlighting his resilience on and off the pitch.
