Yogyakarta readies land for waste-to-energy plant, budgets 17 billion rupiah

The municipal government of Yogyakarta will start land preparation in August 2026 for a waste‑to‑energy (PSEL) facility. The 5.7‑hectare site is located about 500 metres from the existing Piyungan landfill and is a prerequisite before construction can begin. Funding of 17 billion rupiah is shared among the three Kartamantul districts – Yogyakarta city, Sleman and Bantul – with each contributing roughly 5‑6 billion rupiah. The work will be carried out by the city's Public Works, Housing and Settlement Development agency.

Separately, the Yogyakarta Environmental Agency (DLH) confirmed that its Fast‑Response Team (TRC Mas Jos) will provide free, specific‑waste collection for residents who complete required paperwork, guaranteeing pickup within two to seven days, but no later than seven days after the data are complete. In 2026 the team received 2,078 requests, accepted 1,757 of which 1,332 were fully documented, and has already executed over a thousand collections.
