Yong Peng school student death investigated as murder

A 16-year-old student, Irene Sofiya Mohd Khairool Faisal, was found dead in a school hall at SMK Dato’ Seth in Yong Peng, Johor, while attending extra classes. A post-mortem examination at Hospital Sultanah Nora Ismail confirmed that the cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head.

Police have detained three 16-year-old male students in connection with the incident. One suspect has been remanded for six days to assist with the investigation, which is being conducted under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder. Authorities have seized a mobile phone, clothing, and slippers as evidence.

Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek has ordered a comprehensive review of school security, including patrol effectiveness, student attendance records, and the functionality of CCTV systems. She clarified that while the school has CCTV, it was not positioned at the specific site of the incident. The Minister also denied viral social media claims that the victim was dragged from a prayer room to the hall.
