Investigation into Yong Peng student death escalates

Overview

The investigation into the death of 16-year-old student Irene Sofiya Mohd Khairool Faisal in Yong Peng, Johor, has escalated, with police treating the case as a murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code. The victim, a Form Four student at SMK Dato’ Seth, was discovered in a school hall by her grandmother and a friend after she failed to return home from extra classes.

A post-mortem examination conducted at Hospital Sultanah Nora Ismail confirmed that the cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head. Three 16-year-old male students, believed to be classmates of the victim, have been detained. One suspect has been remanded for six days by the Batu Pahat Magistrate's Court to assist with the investigation. Authorities have seized evidence including a mobile phone, clothing, and slippers.

In response to the tragedy, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim ordered an immediate, thorough, and transparent investigation, stating that firm legal action must be taken if criminal elements are identified. He also expressed condolences to the victim's family and emphasized that the government will not compromise on student safety.

Education Minister Datuk Seri Fadhlina Sidek has ordered a comprehensive review of school safety, specifically targeting security patrol protocols, student attendance records for extra classes, and the functionality of CCTV systems. She clarified that while the school has CCTV, it was not positioned at the specific site of the incident. She also denied social media rumors claiming the victim was dragged from a prayer room to the hall. The Johor state government maintains a zero-tolerance policy toward bullying and violence in schools.
