Yoon Suk Yeol indicted over graft charges and acquitted of perjury

Former President Yoon Suk Yeol faces multiple legal developments in South Korea. The Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office has indicted Yoon for violating the Improper Solicitation and Graft Act. The charges stem from his failure to report that his spouse, Kim Keon-hee, received luxury goods, including a Dior bag, from a pastor. Prosecutors determined that the gifts had job-related relevance and that Yoon was aware of the receipt but failed to fulfill his reporting obligations.

In a separate matter, prosecutors decided not to indict Yoon for violating the Public Official Election Act regarding statements made about Kim Keon-hee’s Deutsche Motors stock trading. The prosecution cited a lack of evidence that Yoon directly experienced or verified the facts, noting many events occurred before their marriage.

Regarding perjury allegations, the Seoul High Court upheld a previous ruling acquitting Yoon. The court found that his testimony concerning the timing of a cabinet meeting during the martial law declaration—specifically that he intended to hold the meeting before former Prime Minister Han Duck-soo suggested it—could not be proven as a false statement. The court noted that Yoon’s actions, such as preparing documents for Deputy Prime Minister Choi Sang-mok in advance, supported his claim of prior intent.
