Yosemite wildfire helicopter crash kills two pilots
Two pilots, Greg King and Ryan Cutter, were killed when a contract helicopter crashed while fighting the Dome Fire in Yosemite National Park. The accident occurred on Sunday at approximately 2:55 p.m. local time in Mariposa County, California.
The aircraft, a Eurocopter AS332 Super Puma operated by the aviation company Fly Precision, was performing water-bucket operations to suppress the wildfire when it went down southeast of Ostrander Lake. The pilots were the only occupants on board.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating the cause of the crash. The Dome Fire, which began around September 15, is reported to be approximately 15 percent contained and has burned several thousand acres.
Greg King, a veteran pilot with deep ties to the Alaska Division of Forestry and Fire Protection, was recognized by colleagues for his dedication. Ryan Cutter, a well-known pilot in the Utah community, was also honored by peers following the tragedy.
