Dome Fire in Yosemite National Park

Overview

The Dome Fire in Yosemite National Park, which erupted near the Chilnualna Falls Trailhead around September 15, has expanded to more than 4,000 acres. The blaze remains approximately 15% contained.

On September 20, a firefighting helicopter crash southeast of Ostrander Lake claimed the lives of two pilots, Greg King and Ryan Cutter. The aircraft, a Eurocopter AS332 Super Puma operated by contractor Fly Precision, was performing water-bucket operations at the time of the accident. Ryan Cutter, 46, was a dedicated aerial firefighter with over 6,000 flight hours. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are investigating the cause of the crash.

The fire and associated smoke have caused significant disruptions within the park. Notably, the 16-mile Glacier Point Road has been closed due to smoke and visibility issues. While several trails, including Chilnualna Falls, remain shut down, the Four Mile and Panorama trails have stayed open. Precautionary structure protection points were previously established in Badger Pass, Wawona, and Yosemite West.
