Yosemite National Park helicopter crash kills two pilots
Two pilots were killed on Sunday afternoon when their Eurocopter AS332L1 Super Puma helicopter crashed in Yosemite National Park while battling the Dome Fire. The aircraft, operated by contractor Precision, went down southeast of Ostrander Lake in Mariposa County while performing water bucket drops to suppress the wildfire.
One of the deceased pilots has been identified as Greg King, a veteran aviator with experience in Alaska. The identity of the second pilot is being withheld pending family notification. The crash occurred in rugged, mountainous terrain, which has complicated firefighting efforts for the Dome Fire, a blaze that has burned over 3,000 acres and is approximately 15% contained.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are leading an investigation into the cause of the accident. This incident brings the number of helicopter pilots killed while fighting wildfires in the United States this year to five.
