Young Argentines Face Record Debt Levels in Buenos Aires Province

Juan Cuattromo, president of the Banco de la Provincia de Buenos Aires (BAPRO), said the province is seeing a surge in household loan delinquencies, with young people aged 18 to 30 most affected. He attributed the trend to macro‑economic conditions, rising unemployment and the growth of precarious jobs, rather than individual irresponsibility. Cuattromo criticised the national government's austerity measures under President Javier Milei, urging the implementation of economic tools—similar to those used during the pandemic—to alleviate the pressure on families.

He emphasized that the problem is widespread across Argentina and called for coordinated action by the national government and the Central Bank of Argentina. The rise in credit morosity among low‑income earners highlights broader systemic issues in the country’s labor market and financial sector.
