Argentina youth face severe labor inequality, UCA report finds
A report by the Observatorio de la Deuda Social Argentina (ODSA) at the Universidad Católica Argentina (UCA) reveals severe labor instability and inequality among Argentinian youth aged 18 to 25. The study, titled ‘Juventudes desiguales: entre la promesa y la exclusión’, highlights that only 14.2% of this demographic holds formal employment with full rights. The remaining population is distributed among precarious work, unemployment, and inactivity, with 36.6% classified as inactive.
Economic disparities significantly dictate outcomes. Regular employment is found in 38.9% of youth in middle-high socioeconomic strata, but this figure drops to 19.7% in very low strata. Similarly, the proportion of ‘NiNi’—those neither studying nor working—is 20.7% overall, but rises sharply to 34.2% in the lowest socioeconomic groups. The report emphasizes that these challenges are not merely individual choices but are deeply conditioned by the socioeconomic status of the household of origin, affecting education, psychological well-being, and social mobility.
