Generation Z trend ‘farmear aura’ moves from digital to physical spaces

The term ‘farmear aura’ (farming aura) has emerged as a significant cultural trend among Generation Z, transitioning from video game terminology to a widespread social phenomenon. Derived from the English verb ‘to farm,’ the expression refers to the act of accumulating social prestige, charisma, or presence through specific gestures, attitudes, or witty responses.

While the concept originated in digital spaces like TikTok and Instagram, it is increasingly manifesting in face-to-face interactions. In physical settings, such as public squares in Spain, young people engage in ‘charisma battles’—performances involving memes, acrobatics, or specific poses intended to demonstrate confidence and capture the attention of onlookers.

José Alegría Morán, an academic at the Universidad Católica de Temuco, notes that this trend highlights a paradox: despite the digital origins of the term, the practice places renewed value on immediate, physical presence and the real-time reactions of others. This contrasts with digital communication, which allows for delayed or edited responses, whereas ‘farming aura’ in person requires navigating the uncertainty and tension of direct social engagement.
