Youth use underwater robots to explore Lake Van

Eighteen young participants in the Tatvan district of Bitlis have completed a specialized training program focused on underwater technologies. Using Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs), the students explored the depths of Lake Van to document its underwater environment.

The project, titled ‘My Future is Hidden in Lake Van: Underwater Technologies and Career Path for Youth Aged 14-18’, is conducted by the Anatolian Underwater Research and Sports Association (ASAD) with support from the Ministry of Interior’s Directorate General of Relations with Civil Society. Following theoretical and pool-based practical training, the students applied their skills in real field conditions.

A primary focus of the field study was the recording of microbialites, which are significant natural formations found on the lake bed. The initiative aims to enhance technical skills in underwater robotics among youth while increasing awareness and documentation of Lake Van’s unique natural riches.
