Lake Van youth underwater robotics training project

Overview

An educational initiative has been established to train youth in MicroROV (Micro Remotely Operated Vehicle) technology through the exploration of Lake Van. Supported by the Turkish Ministry of Interior’s General Directorate of Relations with Civil Society, the project aims to introduce participants under the age of 18 to underwater robotics, marine sciences, and the lake’s natural and cultural heritage.

The program, organized by the Anadolu Underwater Research and Sports Association (ASAD), launched specialized ‘MicroROV Pilot Training’ in Tatvan, Bitlis. Following theoretical instruction and pool-based practical training, eighteen students recently completed the program, titled ‘My Future is Hidden in Lake Van: Underwater Technologies and Career Path for Youth Aged 14-18’.

As part of their field application, the students utilized Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) to explore the depths of Lake Van to document its underwater environment. A primary focus of this field study was the recording of microbialites, which are significant natural formations found on the lake bed. The initiative continues to aim at enhancing technical skills in underwater robotics while increasing documentation of the lake’s unique natural riches.
