Youth voter turnout in Czech municipal elections faces engagement gap

A new survey conducted by Ipsos for the Institute of Youth Political Participation (IPPM) reveals a significant gap between the expressed interest of young voters and their actual turnout in municipal elections. While 47 percent of respondents aged 18 to 24 state they are firmly decided to vote, and another 34 percent are considering it, historical data from 2022 shows that only about 20 to 30 percent of voters under 30 actually participated.

Key barriers to participation include a lack of knowledge regarding local candidates and a belief that individual votes do not influence outcomes. Alice Mikulášová, director of IPPM, noted that municipal politics often feels opaque to young people. To address this, the IPPM and the initiative NEZÁJEM are organizing a series of thirteen political debates in regional cities, including Hradec Králové and Liberec, to introduce young candidates and highlight the impact of local government on issues like housing, transport, and culture.
