YouTube faces surge of AI‑generated video content, sparking safety and originality concerns

YouTube’s ecosystem is being reshaped by AI‑driven channels that automatically clip, caption and schedule short videos. Channels such as “Share It..” use pipelines that scrape trending uploads, apply computer‑vision and language models to identify high‑retention moments, and mutate the footage to evade Content ID detection. This industrial‑scale curation prioritises volume and algorithmic hits over original creation.

At the same time, AI‑generated videos aimed at toddlers are proliferating on the platform. A New York Times analysis estimates that up to 40 % of videos recommended to children are AI‑made, often featuring garbled text, distorted imagery and dangerous behaviour such as choking hazards. Experts describe this as “AI slop” that can stunt early brain development. YouTube’s response has been limited to terminating six offending channels, requiring creators to disclose AI use, and offering parental‑control tools – measures critics say place the burden on parents and leave many children unprotected.
