YouTube to change video view counting logic starting August 24

YouTube is implementing a major update to its view-counting logic, effective August 24. The platform will now register a public view as soon as a video, live stream, or Short begins playing, regardless of how long the viewer stays. This move unifies measurement standards across all formats, aligning YouTube with competitors like TikTok and Instagram.

While public view counts are expected to rise significantly due to this change, YouTube clarified that this does not change how creators earn money. Revenue and eligibility for the YouTube Partner Program (YPP) will continue to be based on engagement-focused metrics, such as “engaged views” and “engaged watch hours.” To help creators distinguish between mere exposure and actual interest, the platform will maintain the previous measurement standard under the “Engaged views” metric within YouTube Analytics.

Additionally, YouTube announced updated monetization requirements for new creators starting February 1, 2027. To access revenue sharing from ads and YouTube Premium, new channels must reach either 8,000 valid watch hours in the last 365 days or 20 million valid Shorts views in 90 days. These new thresholds will not affect creators who are already part of the Partner Program.
