YouTube view counting and monetization updates
Overview
YouTube has officially implemented its global update to the video view-counting methodology as of August 24, 2026. Under this new standard, a view is recorded as soon as playback begins from the first frame, applying uniformly to Shorts, long-form videos, live streams, and podcasts. This removes the previous requirement for a minimum watch duration—previously estimated at approximately 30 seconds for long-form content—to align with competitors and reduce “confusion between several measurement systems.”
While public view counters are expected to rise more rapidly—potentially by as much as 30%—the platform noted these totals may be less representative of sustained audience attention. To maintain metric integrity and distinguish between passive exposure and active interest, YouTube will continue to filter out low-quality activity and will rely on “engaged views” and “engaged watch hours” for revenue and engagement-based metrics. These nuanced metrics remain available within YouTube Analytics’ Advanced Mode.
Alongside these metric changes, YouTube has announced updated monetization requirements for new creators effective February 1, 2027. To access revenue sharing from ads and YouTube Premium, new channels must reach either 8,000 valid watch hours in the last 365 days or 20 million valid Shorts views in 90 days. This policy shift, which effectively doubles certain thresholds, is expected to increase pressure on smaller creators attempting to monetize content. These changes will not affect creators who are already part of the YouTube Partner Program.
YouTube also continues its push for AI transparency through labels for significantly altered or AI-produced content and is observing a shift in consumption toward Connected TV (CTV) platforms.
