YouTube to standardize view counts across all video formats

YouTube has announced a global change to its public view count methodology, effective August 24, 2026. Under the new system, a view will be counted from the very first frame of a video, regardless of the format. This standardizes the metric across long-form videos (VOD), live streams, and YouTube Shorts, bringing all formats in line with the counting method previously used for Shorts.

This change is intended to eliminate metric confusion and provide creators with a more consistent view of their total exposure. Consequently, creators are expected to see a rapid increase in their publicly displayed view counts.

Despite the surge in public numbers, YouTube clarified that this update will not impact creator monetization or the requirements for the YouTube Partner Program (YPP). Revenue and eligibility will continue to be calculated using ‘Engaged views’ and ‘Engaged Watch Hours,’ metrics that track actual viewer retention and meaningful interaction. These detailed engagement metrics will remain available to creators within YouTube Analytics.
